Celebrate
This week we celebrate the Constitution of the United States. In the summer of 1787 delegates (38) were tasked to revise the Articles of the Confederation. The challenge led them to create a new government, that united its citizens as equal members and vested the power of the union in the people.
Two Hundred and Thirty-Seven years later Americans are on the verge of exercising that power. A central issue in the 2024 presidential campaign is protecting our democracy. Former President Trump plans to be a “dictator on day one.” The alternative, Vice President Harris has spoken out for constitutionalism, rule of law, full inclusion, nonviolence and respect for elections.
Are we going to balloon our four page Constitution into Trump’s 925 page Project 2025?
American democracy is built on hope, opportunity and resilience. Yet democracy’s survival is far from assured. It’s important to speak up in defense of our democratic ideals when others express skepticism. We must assure liberty and equality that has driven individuals to sacrifice their lives to protect democracy.
Are we willing to stand up for democracy when others express skepticism? Willing to reach out to your friends, relations or acquaintances asking them to join you to protect our form of government?
Congress in 1952 designated September 17 as “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day” and authorized the President to issue a proclamation.
And so, today President Biden proclaimed “We are all responsible for maintaining our democracy – not only by adhering to the Constitution but also by our character and the habits of our hearts and minds. All of us must join the march to perfect our Union by protecting and expanding our rights with each successive generation.”
