Save The Senate
President-elect Trump set off a three-alarm fire today with the announcement to name U. S. Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to be Attorney General of the United States. Tonight television news is full of conflict based on Rep. Gaetz being a bomb thrower and his personal reputation (Goggle him). The issue is larger than Matt Gertz.
The issue is will the U. S. Senate rollover and grant Trump’s request to recess…so his appointments can avoid the traditional confirmation scrutiny. A process used throughout history to ascertain fitness for the office for which candidates have been nominated. An even larger issue…is will the U. S. Senate turn over their responsibility to President-elect Trump?
The constitution provides for three branches of government…Executive, Legislative & Judicial. Just a week ago Trump won the election. Now he using the “recess request” as a test to see if the Legislative (Senate) will just roll over and give him their governmental role? This is a battle worth fighting…one that the America people should engage. Emails, phone calls, personal visits and mail should flood every Senate office saying…NO to allowing President-elect Trump to run the Senate.
Senator John Thune (R-SD), now Senate Majority Leader elected today, should strongly step forward to protect the Constitution. It provides that the president “shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the Supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, who Appointments are herein otherwise provided…”
Though the Senate is now controlled by Republicans this does not excuse Democratic Senators from fighting to save the Senate. The same goes for the American people.
